Sinoboom Adds Collision Avoidance System to Scissor Lifts

Sinoboom has introduced a Collision Avoidance Radar System (CARS) for scissor lifts and mast lifts. The system uses multiple sensors to detect overhead obstacles and can restrict lift movement when an obstacle reaches the second alarm stage.

The CARS sensors are mounted on the platform rail in a compact casing and connected to the lift’s control unit. The system provides two stages of audible and visual warnings based on the distance to an overhead obstacle.

The first alarm stage is triggered when an obstacle is detected between one and two meters overhead. The CARS unit displays a flashing indicator and sounds a buzzer, while the scissor lift’s integral alarm also sounds. On newer control systems, lifting and driving operations are automatically slowed during the first stage.

The second stage is triggered when an obstacle is detected less than one meter overhead. At that point, lifting and driving movements are automatically restricted, while the CARS unit and scissor lift continue to provide audible and visual alarms.

Sinoboom designed CARS to work with both older and newer scissor lift control systems, allowing the system to be used with different existing fleets. The operating experience varies between the two control systems, according to the company, while both use dynamic hazard detection and movement protection.

The system combines an ultrasonic sensor with ±20-degree coverage and a LiDAR sensor providing full-range detection from zero to three meters. Sinoboom says the combination reduces short-range measurement errors by 50%.

CARS also includes one-button calibration that allows the primary alarm distance to be adjusted between 0.6 and 2.5 meters (1.97 and 8.20 feet) based on operator height. The secondary alarm automatically extends the one-meter buffer zone.

An emergency override button allows operations to continue temporarily, with the protection function restored when the button is released.
