Students to Design and Build Scale Steel Bridges
Engineering students will design, fabricate, and test scale steel bridges in the 2027 Student Steel Bridge Competition.
Engineering students will design, analyze, fabricate, and construct scale steel bridges as part of the 2027 Student Steel Bridge Competition organized by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
The competition uses a hypothetical project involving a new steel pedestrian bridge over Clear Creek in Golden, Colorado. Student teams must design a bridge, analyze and optimize the design, and fabricate a 1:10-scale steel version for construction and testing.
The competition requires students to address several of the same considerations involved in real bridge projects. Designs must provide clearance for kayaking and other river recreation, stay within limited construction zones, operate without piers, and account for remotely staging materials and equipment.
Teams also must balance strength, stability, aesthetics, construction time, and cost.
Student engineering teams will compete in regional competitions across North America during the spring. Eligible teams will advance to the national finals, scheduled for June 4 and 5 at the Colorado School of Mines.
At the competition, students assemble scale steel bridges in a timed setting while following safety rules and construction standards. The completed bridges are then tested using 2,500 pounds of steel angles.
“The Student Steel Bridge Competition is a flagship program for AISC and a genuine favorite among our team — especially those who competed themselves during college,” said AISC Senior Director of Education Christina Harber, SE, PE. “Year after year, participants tell us that it was the absolute highlight of their degree, and so many move on to build careers as professional bridge engineers!”
The University of Florida won the 2026 National Finals, marking its sixth consecutive national title.
