The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) is using National Propane Day, observed October 7, to remind contractors and material handling professionals of propane’s role as a dependable energy source amid growing concerns about grid reliability.

This year’s theme, “Prepare with Propane,” comes as a U.S. Department of Energy report warns that blackouts in the United States could increase 100-fold by 2030 due to rising demand on the electric grid. Propane is seen as a solution for ensuring uninterrupted operations across supply chains, including construction sites, ports and warehouses.

“Supply chains can’t afford to miss a beat, especially in an uncertain economic environment,” said Jim Bunsey, senior manager of material handling business development at PERC. “For material handling operations, grid disruptions caused by increased demand and severe weather pose a major threat. Propane power gives operations peace of mind and an unmatched level of resiliency against power outages, from powering forklifts and terminal tractors to providing backup generator power.”

Propane-powered equipment has long been part of the construction and material handling industries. In addition to producing up to 96% fewer nitrogen oxide emissions than diesel, propane supports lower fuel and maintenance costs while improving air quality on job sites.

PERC also noted propane’s role in supporting electric fleet resiliency through propane-powered EV charging systems. These off-grid solutions can be deployed in remote or disaster-affected areas, ensuring vehicles remain operational even when the grid is down.

National Propane Day also serves to recognize propane professionals for their role in keeping operations moving. “From bobtail delivery drivers who make sure customers have energy when they need it to propane service technicians that keep forklifts and terminal tractors operating safely, National Propane Day is also a celebration of them,” Bunsey said.
