Liebherr A 924 Rail Excavator Keeps Railroad Projects on Track
Omaha Track uses Liebherr A 924 Rail excavator for infrastructure reclamation and repairs on Class 1 railroads in Lexington, KY.
Omaha Track, Inc., a leading railroad services and supply company, is using the Liebherr A 924 Rail excavator to support a large-scale infrastructure project on a Norfolk Southern railroad line in Lexington, Kentucky. The machine is being used for a range of services including abandoned track removal, new construction, inspections and rail reclamation.
Following its recent acquisition of the A 924 Rail, Omaha Track is applying the excavator across multiple Class 1 railroad systems to streamline the collection and transport of old track materials. These materials are stockpiled for future recycling, contributing to sustainable construction practices. The machine’s performance and dependability have made it a key component in Omaha Track’s operations.
Jeff Peterson, president of Omaha Track, said, “We are incredibly excited to add the A 924 Rail to our fleet and look forward to watching its progress and performance on our Lexington project site.”
Established in 1983, Omaha Track began as a supplier of reclaimed railroad ties for landscaping. Today, the company is a nationwide railroad material supplier serving Class 1 and short line railroads, contractors and various industries. With around 70 pieces of heavy equipment in its fleet, Omaha Track continues to invest in Liebherr machines to meet evolving jobsite demands.
Peterson emphasized the need for reliability in time-sensitive railroad work, saying, “With over 40 years of industry experience, our biggest challenge remains securing sufficient track time. We need a reliable machine and support team. We greatly value the support Liebherr provides, both here in the U.S. and at their factory in Europe.”
The A 924 Rail excavator is designed specifically for rail infrastructure work, offering high hydraulic performance and the ability to support multiple attachments. According to Marcus Barnes, senior product manager at Liebherr USA, Co., the machine’s versatility enhances project efficiency.
“Our partnership with Omaha Track has demonstrated that a Liebherr railroad excavator is capable of far more than standard railroad track maintenance. It can also play a crucial role in removing old rail track and other track materials such as anchors, plates, and spikes, ensuring these components are recycled rather than discarded,” Barnes said.
Built to handle both road and rail environments, the A 924 Rail features Liebherr’s proprietary hydraulic systems, stability-enhancing rail gear and integrated safety features such as slew limits, rear and side cameras and rollover protection.
Liebherr has manufactured rail-road excavators since 1967. Each machine, including the A 924 Rail, is adapted to meet country-specific track conditions and safety standards. The company also offers a wide range of attachments for customization, making the A 924 Rail a flexible solution for contractors focused on railroad infrastructure and heavy civil projects.
