Geotab Introduces Fleet Incident Investigation Tool

Geotab has introduced Geotab Investigations, a new solution designed to help fleet safety, compliance, and operations teams investigate road incidents using telematics data and other supporting information.

The company announced the solution August 11. Geotab said the tool is intended to address the fragmented and often manual process fleet organizations use to investigate events such as collisions, customer or citizen complaints, property damage, and safety violations.

These investigations can involve operations teams, safety managers, insurance providers, and legal teams. According to Geotab, separating information across those groups can contribute to operational inefficiency as well as legal, compliance, and reputation risks.

“Fleet-related incidents have cost companies billions of dollars in litigation and reputational damage, largely because critical data remains siloed,” said Sabina Martin, vice president of product management at Geotab. “Geotab Investigations changes this by turning raw data into a structured, defensible system of record, providing fleet managers with the intelligence to mitigate risk and the evidence to protect their drivers, operations, and bottom line.”

Geotab Investigations uses existing telematics data to create a centralized view of vehicle and driver activity related to an incident. The company said the approach is intended to reduce manual work and provide time-aligned records that can be used when reviewing incidents and making operational decisions.

The system allows users to search vehicle activity associated with an incident based on location and time. It can also combine trips, driver behavior, speed events, and location data to reconstruct the sequence of events before, during, and after an incident.

External information can be added to an investigation as well. Notes, emails, reports, documents, photos, and video can be organized alongside telematics information to provide additional context.

Geotab Investigations also provides a structured case workflow that allows incidents to be tracked from opening through closure. The company said the workflow is designed to support accountability, governance, and auditing.

The system provides stakeholders with time-aligned vehicle and driver records for operational reviews, insurance claims, compliance requirements, and internal decision-making.

Geotab said using accurate data to investigate incidents can also help fleets determine what occurred and reduce the risk of incorrectly assigning blame to drivers.

The company noted that Geotab Investigations is provided for limited informational purposes and is not an evidence-preservation, legal hold, or custodial service. Customers remain responsible for preserving and producing data or evidence required for litigation or investigations, including legal hold and chain-of-custody obligations.

Geotab advises customers to consult qualified legal counsel in the event of potential or actual litigation related to a collision.
