Detroit has expanded its DT12 Vocational transmission lineup with the introduction of the DT12-VL, a lightweight automated manual transmission designed for heavy-duty vocational applications. The DT12-VL is engineered to maximize payload while providing enhanced off-road performance and drivability.

Weighing 125 pounds less than the DT12-V, the DT12-VL is ideal for mixers, dumps, bulk haulers and other weight-sensitive vocational trucks. It delivers 1,650 pound-feet of torque, offers 12 forward speeds and up to four reverse speeds and supports gross combination weights up to 80,000 pounds. The transmission also includes a rear PTO and a wide ratio range from 11.67 in first gear to 0.78 in top gear.

“The DT12-VL is a testament to our commitment to the vocational customer, and to our ability to adapt and innovate on proven solutions," said Aaron Scates, vice president, vocational and medium duty market development, Daimler Truck North America. "With the DT12-VL, we can offer the benefits of the Vocational DT12 to customers that need to maximize payload.”

The DT12-VL incorporates off-road, rock-free and paver modes to improve drivability in challenging environments. It will be available for Freightliner 114SD and Western Star 47X, compatible with Detroit DD13 engines. Production is scheduled to begin in December 2025.
