Along with the staff at the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), The Arizona Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America (AZAGC) helped lead the organization of the groundbreaking ceremony for the Loop 303 and I-17 interchange, officially launching the first construction project funded under Proposition 479, Maricopa County’s long-term transportation investment plan.

Held on the morning of March 6, 2026, west of Interstate 17 at the Loop 303 intersection, the event brought together state leaders, regional policymakers, contractors, engineers and industry partners to celebrate the start of a project that will play a critical role in the region’s transportation infrastructure.

Attendees gathered at the nearby Ben Avery Shooting Facility, where shuttle buses transported guests to the project site between the eastbound and westbound lanes of Loop 303.

The ceremony featured remarks from Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, mayor of The City of Phoenix Kate Gallego, Alexis Hermosillo, chair of the MAG and Jerry Weiers, chair of the MAG transportation policy committee.

This groundbreaking event marks the official start of Proposition 479 projects and celebrates the launch of the first project, the Loop 303 and I-17 interchange, a critical investment in the region’s transportation future. The initiative continues the legacy of voter-approved transportation funding previously delivered through Propositions 300 and 400, programs that helped build and expand much of Maricopa County’s modern transportation network.

As part of the ceremony, guests walked through a visual timeline showcasing major transportation projects delivered under Propositions 300 and 400, displayed on large campaign-style signs along the pathway to the event tent. The timeline culminated with the unveiling of the official Prop 479 road sign, which will be installed at every project site funded under the program.

“Projects like the Loop 303 and I-17 interchange represent exactly what our industry does best — building the infrastructure that keeps Arizona moving forward,” said David Martin, president of the AZAGC. “Proposition 479 ensures that contractors, engineers and skilled workers across our state will continue delivering the roads, bridges and transportation systems that support economic growth and quality of life for our communities. The Arizona Chapter AGC is proud to help bring industry and public leaders together to celebrate the start of this important investment in our region.”

For contractors and infrastructure professionals across Arizona, the Loop 303 and I-17 interchange represents a critical project that will improve freight movement, enhance regional connectivity and support the continued growth of the northwest Valley.

With construction now underway, the groundbreaking signals the beginning of a new generation of infrastructure projects that will be delivered by Arizona’s construction industry under Proposition 479, reinforcing the partnership between public investment and the builders who help bring these projects to life.

The Arizona Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America represents highway, heavy, industrial,  contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and service providers across Arizona’s construction industry.
