Mid-Atlantic Steel Erectors Inc. Relies on Sany America

Founded in 2006 by Roy Fridley, his brother Vernon Fridley, Jr. (Bubba), and their mother Carol, MASE now employs about 300 people and tackles construction projects of all sizes, some requiring more than 20,000 tons of steel.

A Decade of Growth
Today, the MASE fleet of cranes ranges in capacity from 5 tons to 550 and includes all types from mini cranes to carry-decks, rough terrains, all terrains, telescopic-boom crawlers, lattice-boom crawlers, and a super-lift attachment.
Currently, 22 of the 50 cranes in the MASE fleet were manufactured by Sany.
“We bought our first Sany crane in 2015. The performance and reliability of that 300-ton lattice-boom crawler convinced us to add more Sany cranes to our fleet as our business grew,” said Fridley. “Today, 44 percent of our cranes are Sanys.”
Those Sany cranes range in capacity from 85-ton rough-terrains to 160-ton teleboom crawlers and a 440-ton lattice-boom crawler with super-lift attachment.
The newest addition is a 330-ton lattice-boom crawler just handed over at ConExpo in early March of this year.
Great Bang for the Buck
“MASE has continued to invest in Sany cranes because they deliver a great bang for the buck,” Fridley said. “They are very reliable, solidly made, and have excellent operator comfort and ease-of-operation features at a very competitive price. They’re productive and deliver good return on investment.”
Fridley noted that he’s found the lifting capacities of Sany cranes to be competitive at all radii, but particularly good on long booms and luffing jibs. “We’re really happy with how well the capacity charts match the needs of steel erection,” he said. “Also, the newer models operate really smoothly, which is important when you’re precision-spotting steel.”
Customer Input Spurs Improvement
Feedback from owners and users like MASE has been vital in Sany’s development and continuing improvement of crane products for North America during the past decade.
Customer guidance has helped the company improve quality, comfort, controllability, reliability, ease of maintenance, and easy shipping and assembly.
“When Sany asks us how they can improve their products and support, we give them our honest opinion about what works well and what needs fixing,” said Fridley. “Sany has really paid close attention, and the result has been products and support that keep getting better.”
Attentive Support Important
Speaking about parts support, Fridley noted that Sany service and parts support has improved a lot in recent years. “For current models, the company has nearly all of the standard parts on the shelf ready to ship,” he said.
“Sany’s service training and support are only a phone call away,” Fridley added. “Our MASE mechanics are all well trained, and some have received one-on-one training from Sany’s field-service experts, so we can handle almost anything that comes up. Also, the diagnostic systems in Sany cranes help diagnose many situations. But when something unusual comes along, we can connect with a Sany technical expert here in the U.S. by phone anytime, day or night.”
