Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) released its 2024 Safety Performance Report, outlining the latest health and safety best practices on construction jobsites.
The 2024 Safety Performance Report, released to coincide with Construction Safety Week, which runs from May 6 to May 10, delved into the impact of ABC’s STEP Safety Management System, Since its inception in 1989, the system has provided contractors and suppliers with a framework for measuring safety data and benchmarking against industry peers.
“Both the 2024 ABC Safety Performance Report and ABC’s STEP Safety Management System will help any contractor or supplier on their safety journey,” Greg Sizemore, ABC’s vice president of health, safety, environment and workforce development, said in a statement. “If we choose to lead, if we choose to commit and if we choose to transform, together we will create the conditions for everyone to do their work without incident and go home safer, healthier, happier and fulfilled every day.”
The report is based on research covering more than 900 million work hours worked in 2023, and showed that active involvement from top management saw a 54% reduction in total recordable incident rates (TRIR) and a 52% decline in days away, restricted or transferred rates (DART).
Companies with active substance abuse prevention programs helped reduce TRIR and DART rates by more than 47% while mandating comprehensive safety orientations resulted in incident rates that are 45% lower.
“Including health and safety in every action requires a commitment to excellence, a culture of accountability and a relentless pursuit of ensuring every worker returns home safely every day,” Buddy Henley, president at Henley Construction Co. Inc., in Gaithersburg, Md., said. “STEP provides the platform for every company to measure, strengthen and build their safety culture.”
For the past seven years, ABC’s Safety Performance Report has provided insights into what an industry-leading safety program looks like for many companies, and is based on real work and real projects by ABC STEP member companies.
